A Look Inside the Dryer Vent

Are your clothes taking longer to dry?

This local preschool's dryer was taking forever to dry laundry, so they bought a new one. When the installer removed the flexible transition hose from behind the dryer, WATER poured out all over the floor! They were frantic, so they called us after seeing our recommendations on Nextdoor.

Our Mama Bear technician arrived the next morning and discovered the problem: a completely clogged termination point on the roof.

Despite a recent vent cleaning by another company, it appeared they only cleaned from the inside, pushing the lint and debris up to the termination point and creating a big, moldy clog. This blockage prevented the humid air from escaping, causing lint and water to back up in the vent.

Starting on the roof, we removed the blockage, took initial airflow readings, and began the cleaning process. Piles of wet lint were removed, and the airflow reading improved dramatically from 631.9 ft/min (after clearing the opening) to 1,704 ft/min once the full vent was cleaned!

In under two hours, the preschool's new dryer was back in working order, and the children got some bonus entertainment watching "that guy on the roof" do his work!

Mama Bear is here to ensure your dryer vents are cleaned thoroughly, inside and out, for optimal performance and safety.

Every 1-2 years, your vent should be cleaned to remove flammable lint, provide proper airflow for your dryer, and avoid urgent problems like this one!

From Clogged to Clear:
The Power of a Proper Vent Cover

Does the dryer vent cover on your roof look like this?

If so, you likely need to clean the vent more frequently.

Why? With this type of cover, air comes up and hits the top, pushing the air back down and out the sides. This backwards pressure makes your dryer work harder to expel air and lint, and more lint builds up in the vent over time. A dryer that vents through the roof already has to work harder to move that air up and out, so back pressure at the opening is especially undesirable.

This customer cleaned their vent a few years ago, so they were astonished at what we found!

The good news? A more efficient dryer vent cover has been engineered to eliminate airflow restriction– the DryerJack. It offers bird, pest and rain protection with no back pressure!

We upgraded their vent cover to DryerJack and doubled the airflow, leaving them with a clean vent and a more efficient system that will save energy, extend the life of the dryer, and reduce the risk of fire.

Bird Nest or Screen Blocking Your Vent?

Do not EVER let someone put a screen like this over your dryer vent.

This unfortunate customer replaced her dryer thinking it was broken. When the new one came, it also took forever to dry a load of laundry and it had an error message to "clean lint filter." Luckily, her friend tagged her to a post in the amazing East Cobb Moms Facebook group and she called us to come take a look.

At some point, a screen had been put over the dryer exhaust termination to prevent pests from coming in. This should never be done as lint is meant to be expelled through the exhaust vent and a screen will block it and cause a clog. Not only that, but the service person who put the screen in must not have known there was a nest full of eggs a little more than an arm's length inside the vent. Airflow was practically zero before we started.

We removed the nest, cleaned the vent, and best of all, we installed a DryerWallVent that is specifically designed to keep pests out without blocking lint discharge or airflow. We carry these premium vent covers in a variety of colors to match the aesthetic of your home.

If your laundry is taking a long time to dry or if your dryer feels so hot you're afraid to run it, before you replace the dryer or call a repairman, clean the vent. There's a good chance it will solve the problem, and at the very least, the vent will be clean and ready for optimal airflow if you do need a new dryer.

This is such satisfying work, cleaning things up and making life easier for our customers! We only wish we got there when the eggs were first laid.

Lint Inside the Dryer: An Unexpected Cause of Dryer Error Codes

This handy customer regularly cleaned his dryer vent, which was only two feet long and straight, making it easier for a DIYer to handle. He was surprised when his dryer displayed a D80 code, indicating restricted airflow between the dryer and the outside exhaust exit.

When we inspected the vent, it was fairly clean. However, when we took a look inside the dryer itself, we discovered inches of lint built up on critical components. This buildup can severely impact dryer performance and safety.

Here you can see the amazing impacts of our thorough dryer cabinet cleaning - the inside of the dryer now looks brand new!

Why Clean the Inside of Your Dryer?

  • Lint Accumulation: As you can see, lint not only collects in the lint trap and vent but also inside the dryer unit itself. This hidden lint can cause the dryer to work improperly or overheat.

  • Fire Risk: The primary contributing factors to dryer fires are a lack of maintenance, buildup of lint, placing inappropriate items in the dryer, and inadequate venting. Source

  • Efficiency and Longevity: Regular internal cleanings help preserve the inner workings of your dryer and provide for optimal airflow, ensuring your dryer operates efficiently, reduces wear and tear, and extends its lifespan.

What to Do if You Get a Clean Lint Error Code

If you encounter error codes like D80, D90, D95, or other 'clean lint' error codes and your attempts to resolve the issue aren't working, it’s time to call in the experts. We can inspect and clean your dryer’s exhaust system and internal components, restoring optimal airflow and giving you peace of mind.

Wet or Excessive Lint

An urgent call we often get comes when a customer has found wet lint...either in the lint trap, at the outside termination point, or in the transition hose behind the dryer. The primary cause of wet lint or water in the vent is a dirty vent or other obstruction along the dryer exhaust system that prevents the humid air from exhausting outside.

Another clue that there are problems with the dryer exhaust system is excessive lint or humidity in the laundry room or anywhere along the ductwork.

While staying on top of dryer vent cleaning allows your dryer to perform better and last longer, we understand that sometimes maintenance gets overlooked and leads to a laundry crisis.

At Mama Bear Dryer Vent Care, we specialize in diagnosing and resolving dryer vent issues efficiently, ensuring your home remains safe and your appliance operates at peak performance. And we always clean up the mess to leave your home tidier than we found it!

Dryer Vent Reroute & Repair

Repairs and reroutes of dryer vents are an important part of what we do!

We are a proud installer of InOvate Dryer Product's premium dryer exhaust system products. InOvate has spent decades focused specifically on reengineering dryer vent components for maximum efficiency that meet or exceed all code requirements and deliver superior airflow efficiency.

A properly functioning dryer vent system is crucial for the safety and efficiency of your dryer. Over time, dryer vents can become obstructed or damaged, leading to decreased performance, higher energy costs, and potential fire hazards. We specialize in comprehensive dryer vent reroutes and repairs to ensure your dryer operates safely and efficiently.

Why Reroute Your Dryer Vent?

Many homes have dryer vents that take unnecessarily long or complicated paths to the exterior. This can cause several issues:

  • Increased Lint Build-up: Longer vent routes provide more opportunities for lint to accumulate, which can lead to blockages and potential fire hazards.

  • Reduced Efficiency: A complex vent route can make it harder for the dryer to expel moist air, reducing its efficiency and increasing drying times.

  • Higher Energy Bills: When your dryer has to work harder, it consumes more energy, leading to higher utility costs.

Hiring a certified expert ensures safety, expertise, and compliance with industry standards. Our CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician (C-DET) designation means that we meet rigorous safety and performance measures set by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), including code compliance and proper installation procedures.  Don't compromise on safety or efficiency—choose certified professionals for peace of mind!
